.FAREWELL & THANK YOU

It has been my pleasure to represent you, the members of SEOEA-R.  The best part has been seeing more and more SEOEA-R members support SEOEA-R and attend OEA-R events.  For instance, Southeast Retired had more attendees than any of the other Districts at the 2016 Spring Conference which included a visit to the Columbus Art Museum.  At the beginning of my tenure as SEOEA-R Rep, I worked without support, but am happy to report that recently others have stepped in to help.  Thank you to Crista Hahn and then Jeff Slattery for maintaining the SEOEA-R website.  Thanks to Charlie Wilcoxen and Bob Maher for their two years of service as members of the Luncheon Program Committee.  Thank you Pam Smith (2015) and Jane Miller (2016) for making luncheon venue arrangements in their hometowns for our annual SEOEA-R Luncheon.   Thanks to Mike Waggoner & Art Fordum for lobbying with me in Columbus from time to time.  It is my hope that more and more of you will actively support SEOEA-R.  While Jane Miller will be Representing us in future, I plan to continue to do my part.        Yours, Christine McVciar

INTRODUCING OUR LUNCHEON PROGRAM

Guy Kendall-Freas from NEA Member Benefits has been addressing OEA/OEA-R groups for years.  He has a variety of presentations and is always entertaining.  This year he will present “What I Want My Loved Ones to Know: A Practical Look at Life and Family Preparedness”.  This discussion includes the importance of having a will, a durable power of attorney for health care, the kinds of medical treatment you may or may not want, life, disability and long-term care insurance and making sure your loved ones know where to find your important papers …and much more.

Todd Jaeck has been on the OEA staff for many years before he became our OEA-R’s OEA Liaison.  With “A Role for Retired Members in OEA”, Todd will present an overview of OEA’s New Educators Initiative and explain how Retired Members can support our OEA’s effort to reduce the number of new teachers who leave the profession within 5 years. (Career teachers & Education Support Personnel SERS and STRS contributions are significantly higher which affects our retirement systems.)

Since STRS will not be doing their regional meetings this Fall, we are especially pleased to welcome Hope Short from STRS.  She will share STRS UPDATES with time for questions.

We will be ending our meeting on a “light note”. Charlie Wilcoxen, Retired Member and Local Musician, will tell us about his violin collection and play some music for us.

Things to Do in Marietta

Campus Martius, a civilian fortification, was built in 1788 by the Ohio Company of Associates. When the fort was disassembled, General Rufus Putnam left his blockhouse on the original fort site. In 1931 Campus Martius Museum was erected over the Rufus Putnam House. The Ohio Company Land Office, the oldest known building in Ohio, was also moved to the museum site. Today, the museum preserves the history of America’s migration west, its earliest native inhabitants, and Marietta’s pioneers.  See www.campusmartiusmuseum.org & 740-373-3750.

Ohio River Museum Discover the golden age of the steamboat and learn more about the ecology of the Ohio River system. The Ohio River Museum consists of three exhibit buildings, the first chronicling the origins and natural history of the Ohio River. The history of the steamboat on the Ohio River system is featured in the second building, along with a video presentation on river steamboats. The last building features displays about boat building, mussels in the Ohio River system, and tools and equipment from the steamboat era. + Outside the museum, on the Muskingum River, visitors can take an escorted tour of the W. P. SNYDER JR.– the last intact steam-powered “pool-type” stern-wheeled towboat in the United States.  See www.campusmartiusmuseum.org & 740-373-3750.

The Castle With its octagonal tower, trefoil attic window, and stone capped spires, The Castle is one of the best-executed examples of Gothic Revival style architecture in Ohio. Interior architectural details include a scagliola fireplace surround and floor to ceiling shutters on the parlor’s bay window. The house, once the home of Ohio Senator Theodore Davis, is furnished with items of historical significance to the area, as well as those typical of the Victorian Era. Educational programs, special events, and changing exhibits are featured throughout the year. The Carriage House Visitors Center includes introductory exhibit and videotape on the history of the site and its families that resided in The Castle. The Historic House Museum is on the National Historic Register. www.mariettacastle.org & 740-373-418
